Maintaining the FIRMS List Yourself vs. Using an API
If your software needs FIRMS codes, you can maintain an internal reference table or use a service that exposes the records through an API. The right choice depends on how your product searches, updates, and uses that data.
What an internal table needs
Importing a dataset is the first step. A production implementation also needs a process for source updates, deleted records, missing fields, inconsistent naming, and changes to records your users already saved.
If users search by facility name rather than exact code, your team also needs to decide how search results are ranked and how similar records are distinguished. Facility names alone are not enough to establish that two records represent the same thing.
What an API changes
An API can provide maintained lookup and search behavior through a documented interface. FIRMSapi also offers supported validation checks and plan-dependent change-monitoring capabilities.
Your application still needs to handle authentication, availability, usage limits, exceptions, and the user experience around selecting a record. Using an API does not remove the need to understand the data’s limits.
Compare the work your product actually needs
| Requirement | Internal implementation | FIRMSapi integration |
|---|---|---|
| Exact-code lookup | Import and maintain a reference table | Call the lookup endpoint |
| Facility-name search | Build and maintain search behavior | Integrate supported search and autocomplete |
| Deleted records | Preserve status and decide retention behavior | Handle returned deleted status |
| Updates | Detect and process source changes | Use documented source metadata and eligible change features |
| Validation | Implement and maintain explicit checks | Interpret supported check results and their limits |
| Reliability | Operate your data pipeline and lookup service | Handle API failures, quotas, and your own fallback policy |
| Cost | Engineering, operations, and maintenance | Plan charges plus integration and operational work |
When to evaluate FIRMSapi
FIRMSapi is worth evaluating when your product needs facility search, repeated code lookups, supported pre-filing checks, or a way to monitor changes without building each capability yourself.
Start with one real workflow. Measure the requests it generates, test the exception paths, and compare the ongoing maintenance responsibilities of each approach. Confirm any storage or redistribution requirements before choosing the design.
